Arkansas’ own “painter of spirals” Maryevelyn Jones grew up in the scenic woods on the outskirts of Conway. As a child, Jones began her artistic career by imitating her mother’s drawings. Love of nature and observation of its riches were values instilled into Jones at a young age by her parents. Growing up, Jones climbed trees, built her own treehouse and loved looking over the Ozark hills surrounding her home. These early influences continue to be expressed in her art.
Jones has studied art at Hendrix College, the University of Central Arkansas, and the UA-Fayetteville. Backpacking across Europe for three months, as well as a brief stay in Japan, has helped Jones gain an international perspective on beauty and art that is reflected in her work. Jones describes her work as a blend of Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism with influences from painters as diverse as Picasso, Dale, and Van Gogh. Radical, imaginative and fun, Jones’ work will capture your imagination and delight your aesthetic sense. She is truly an original and distinctive artist. Her work will be on display through March at The Perk on Wedington Drive in Fayetteville.
